The Yard: HBCU Love

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) provide a vibrant and unique experience that celebrates Black culture, history, and academic excellence. Life at an HBCU is often characterized by a strong sense of community, where students, faculty, and staff support each other both inside and outside the classroom. The close-knit environment fosters lifelong friendships and mentorships.

At an HBCU, you'll find a rich tradition of student activism and leadership, where students are encouraged to engage in social justice initiatives and make a difference in their communities. The campuses are often filled with cultural events, step shows, and homecoming celebrations that bring everyone together.

Academically, HBCUs offer rigorous programs across various fields, producing graduates who are well-prepared to excel in their careers. The legacy of excellence is reflected in the success of many HBCU alumni who have become leaders in business, politics, arts, and sciences.

In essence, HBCU life is about empowerment, pride, and heritage, offering an educational experience that is as enriching socially as it is academically.

As a participant of "The Yard" you will have the opportunity to learn more about these amazing institutions in depth through research, networking, and the Rising Knights HBCU College Tour! This program is open students in 8th-12th grades.

Rising Knights HBCU College Tour

This extended learning opportunity is aimed at encouraging our young students of color to pursue post-secondary education, to expose all interested students to Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and to showcase our talent nationwide through performance and community service. This unique tour strives to stimulate interest among select students in attending one of the public or privately supported HBCUs.

The project's long-term objective is to develop ways and means to ensure that qualified underserved high school students become familiar with the historic mission of Black Colleges and Universities and their broad range of high-quality educational programs and academic fields. Another objective is to identify students who would especially benefit from the stimulating and supportive learning environments so characteristic of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

As a result of previous trips, we have alumni who have recently graduated from or are currently attending the following schools: Kentucky State University, Bowie State University, Howard University, Lane College, Jackson State University, Harris-Stowe State University, Tennessee State University, Alabama A&M University, Central State University, North Carolina Central University, Talladega College, Alabama State University, Jackson State University, Grambling State University, Philander Smith College, Fayetteville State University, North Carolina A&T University, Paul Quinn College, Virginia State University, and Hampton University, just to name a few.

The Divine Nine

The Divine Nine refers to the nine historically Black fraternities and sororities that make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). These organizations were founded to foster academic excellence, community service, and cultural awareness among African American students. The members of the Divine Nine are:

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (1906)
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (1908)
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. (1911)
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. (1911)
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (1913)
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. (1914)
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. (1920)
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. (1922)
Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. (1996)

These organizations have a long history of promoting social justice, community service, and leadership among their members. They continue to play a significant role in supporting Black students and communities across the United States.

Many of our students go on to join these organizations as HBCU students. Through The Yard, we offer networking opportunities and counsel to learn more about joining these illustrious organizations.

HBCU 101

While engaged in research of the rich history of HBCUs, students will learn about the inception, legacy, cultural significance, community and support, leadership, activism, diverse academic programs, and affordable education provided by these institutions. They will also discover myths and fun facts as well as notable alumni as they determine if any of the schools align with their future goals and aspirations.
